Frequently Asked Questions - XI SYSTEM CABASSE

How to configure the XI SYSTEM in 5.1?

For a 5.1 configuration, connect the 5 satellites (front left, front right, center, surround left, surround right) to the corresponding outputs of the audio-video amplifier. Use the supplied MAX bass combiner by connecting the 5 pairs of cables from the MAX in parallel with the speaker cables. Then connect the MAX to the subwoofer via a CINCH cable, and the subwoofer's LFE output to the amplifier's SUBWOOFER output using the second CINCH cable.

Why is there no sound?

Check that the amplifier and subwoofer are plugged into the mains and turned on (ON or AUTO position). Ensure the audio source is correctly selected (CD, DVD, etc.). Check the satellite connections and that the digital connectors (coaxial/optical) are properly inserted.

How to adjust the subwoofer?

Set the voltage selector to 115V or 230V according to your mains. The power switch has three positions: ON (continuous operation), AUTO (automatic power-on upon signal detection), OFF. Set the CROSSOVER to 3 H, then adjust the VOLUME (12 H position for medium setting). The PHASE is usually set to 0° if the subwoofer is equidistant from the satellites, or 180° if it is offset.

How to clean the XI SYSTEM speakers?

Use a soft, dry cloth for the surfaces. For the protective grilles, use a vacuum cleaner on low power. Never use detergents, solvents, alcohol or abrasive products that could damage the speakers.

What to do if the sound is too weak or distorted?

Check the polarity of the connections (red to red, black to black). Adjust the VOLUME and CROSSOVER controls on the subwoofer. Check the amplifier settings (all channels set to 'LARGE' and subwoofer enabled). Ensure the satellites are not obstructed.

Can I use the satellites with another amplifier?

Yes, the satellites have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and a power handling of 100 W RMS. They can be used with any compatible amplifier. For the subwoofer, the MAX combiner is essential for extracting the bass; its use is required for proper system operation.

What is the difference between the bookshelf and floorstanding versions?

The bookshelf satellites (42×12×15 cm, 4 kg) are designed to be placed on a shelf or mounted on optional stands (sold separately). The floorstanding columns (103×13.2×11.5 cm, 8 kg) are to be placed on the floor with a base and anti-vibration pads. Both versions offer the same acoustic performance.

How to mount a satellite on the wall?

For horizontal mounting (center channel), screw the two silent-block studs onto the back of the satellite. For vertical mounting (main or surround channels), unscrew the two nuts on the back, rotate them 90°, and screw them back. Use the supplied male wall brackets by fixing them to the wall with appropriate screws.

Why is there not enough bass?

Move the subwoofer closer to a wall or corner to increase deep bass. Move it away to decrease the level. Adjust the subwoofer's VOLUME control and your amplifier's LFE control. Also check that the CROSSOVER is set correctly (usually to 3 H).

What to do if the system does not turn on?

Check that the subwoofer power cable is properly plugged in and that the mains switch is set to the correct voltage (115V or 230V). Ensure the power switch is set to ON or AUTO. If the amplifier is off, the subwoofer in AUTO mode will not turn on.

Please read carefully these instructions before setting up your speakers.

With the Xi SYSTEM®, Cabasse proposes a Hi Fi / audio video system based on the Spatially Coherent Source (SCS) principles coming from our high end ARTIS range of speakers.

With these 2-way speakers combined with a Xi active subwoofer, you can get a very high quality system, either in a 2.1 configuration (standard stereo) or in a 5.1 configuration (5 channels system) or 6.1 or 7.2...

UNPACKING

Open carton flaps; leave one by one all the components.

If the speakers or the subwoofer appear damaged, do not use them. Repack everything in the original packing and contact your authorized Cabasse dealer immediately. We suggest you to retain the packing for future use.

SETTING UP

Caution

Handle with care the 35.5 lb (16 kg) of the subwoofer. Use good lifting practice to avoid injury.

To avoid electric shock or fire hazards, do not expose speakers to rain or moisture.

Caution

To avoid danger of suffocation keeps the plastic bags that wrap these speakers out of the reach of children.

The components of your system:

1 Xi active subwoofer including 1 MAX Cabasse and 2 CINCH cables of 6 meters.

Xi column version

It is a floor standing version, the base of the Xi column has "silent-blocks" for a perfect stability on all types of floor. Xi column must be assembled on its base trough 3 screws and an allen key delivered in the pack ① .

Xi bookshelf version

The Xi bookshelf version can be placed on a shelf or fixed on a stand, a set of 2 stands for Xi bookshelf is sold separately. The bookshelf version can be fixed on the Xi stand with 4 screws delivered with the stands ⑧ .

Xi centre/on wall version

This version allows you:

to place your speaker horizontally on/under a television set or on a shelf (centre way) thanks to the 2 “silent-block” pins to be screwed on the back of the speakers ③ ,
to fix your speaker horizontally on to the wall (centre way), thanks to 2 brackets included, these brackets are to be fixed on the wall with 2 screws ④ ,
to fix your speaker vertically on the wall (main or surround ways), thanks to 2 brackets included, these brackets are to be fixed on the wall with 2 screws. In this case, it is necessary first to unscrew the 2 female brackets located on the back of the speakers, turn them 90^ around, and screw up them back

Positioning of Xi SYSTEM®

Xi speakers have all the same technical features; they can be used on any channel. All the speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent interference with the image of your television set; they can thus be placed near any screen.

Front left and right speakers must be directed towards the listening area and placed on either side of the screen with at least a distance of 7 ft and 16 ft (2 and 5 m) between the 2 speakers.

The centre satellite should be placed as close as possible to the screen: on the top, below, or directly on your television set. Place the satellite at the vertical of the screen for a perfect cohesion and precision between dialogues and picture.

Surround speakers should be placed against the side walls, at listening height or higher if possible and slightly behind the listening area.

The subwoofer should be placed in the front listening area. To get the best result, it is always necessary to carry out tests according to the acoustics of the room. To prevent interference with the screen of your television set, place the subwoofer at least 2 ft (0,6m) of your television set.

Caution

Before making any connection turns off your amplifier and unplugs it from the outlet.

Not doing so may result in damage to your system.

Caution

It is imperative before any connection to respect the setting in phase by connecting the terminals + / red of the amplifier to the terminal + / red of the speakers. Proceed then in the same way for terminals -/black.

Caution

The use of the MAX Cabasse module is essential to the correct operation of Xi SYSTEM; therefore, it is necessary to respect the following connection instructions.

Connections

2.1 Configuration/Stereo ⑦

2 Xi speakers + 1 Xi subwoofer

(delivered with a MAX module and 2 CINCH cables)

Connect each output of the amplifier directly to the matching Xi speaker: “FRONT LEFT” and “FRONT RIGHT”.

Use the MAX module and one of the 2 CINCH cables for the connection of the subwoofer. Low frequencies coming from the 2 channels of your amplifier are taken directly from the amplifier with the MAX module and directed with one of the CINCH cable to the MAX IN input of the subwoofer. For the MAX module, cables are standardized; they can be connected to any speaker's outputs of the amplifier. It is absolutely necessary to respect the polarity (+/red, - /black) while connecting 2 of the 5 pairs of cables of the MAX in parallel with the speaker's cables connecting the amplifier to the Xi speakers.

Caution

To avoid any electrical shock on the 3 left pairs of cable of the MAX insulates them from each other.

Configuration 5.1 ⑧

5 Xi speakers + 1 Xi subwoofer

(delivered with a MAX module and 2 CINCH cables)

Connect each output of the audio video amplifier directly to the matching Xi speaker: “FRONT LEFT”, “FRONT RIGHT”, “CENTRE”, “SURROUND LEFT” and “SURROUND RIGHT”.

Use the MAX module and the 2 CINCH cables for the connection of the subwoofer. Low frequencies coming from the 5 channels of your audio video amplifier are taken directly from the audio video amplifier with the MAX module and directed with one of the CINCH cable to the MAX IN input of the subwoofer. For the MAX module, cables are standardized; they can be connected to any speaker's outputs of the amplifier. It is absolutely necessary to respect the polarity (+/red, - /black) while connecting the 5 pairs of cables of the MAX in parallel with the speaker's cables connecting the audio video amplifier to the Xi speakers.

Then connect the input LFE IN of the subwoofer to the output SUBWOOFER/LFE of the audio video amplifier using the second CINCH cable.

Evolution from a stereo configuration to a 5.1 configuration ⑨

Connect each output of the audio video amplifier directly to the matching speaker: “FRONT LEFT” and “FRONT RIGHT” to your Cabasse speakers, “CENTRE”, “SURROUND LEFT” and “SURROUND RIGHT” to the Xi speakers.

Use the MAX module and the 2 CINCH cables for the connection of the subwoofer. Low frequencies coming from the 3 channels “CENTRE”, “SURROUND LEFT” and “SURROUND RIGHT” of your audio video amplifier are taken directly from the audio video amplifier with the MAX module and directed with one of the CINCH cable to the MAX IN input of the subwoofer. For the MAX module, cables are standardized; they can be connected to any speaker’s outputs of the audio video amplifier. It is absolutely necessary to respect the polarity (+/red, -/black) while connecting 3 of the 5 pairs of cables of the MAX in parallel with the speaker’s cables connecting the audio video amplifier to the Xi speakers.

Then connect the input LFE IN of the subwoofer to the output SUBWOOFER/LFE of the audio video amplifier using the second CINCH cable.

Caution

To avoid any electrical shock on the 2 left pairs of cables of the MAX insulates them from each other.

nected according to its position in the room. Check that all the speakers are well in phase (+/red in +/red and -/black in -/black). Once this checking made you can connect your amplifier and the subwoofer to the sector.

ADJUSTING

Subwoofer adjusting

Take care of positioning the sector switch 115V/230V on the right position according to your country.

The switch ON/OFF (located on the back) of the subwoofer has 3 positions:

ON

AUTO Automatic, the system is put automatically on ON or OFF according to the presence of signal coming from the amplifier. Put the switch ON/OFF on AUTO or ON position.

OFF

CROSSOVER (located on the front): adjust the potentiometer on a "3 AM" position.

VOLUME (located on the front): the adjustment of the volume will depend upon room positioning, type of amplifiers... With Xi SYSTEM® the average position is on a "12 AM" position. For an optimum adjustment of the volume, we advise you to carry out it starting from a stereo source (CD). Then use the "test tone" of your audio amplifier video 5.1 to adjust the level of channel SUBWOOFER/LFE.

PHASE (located on the front): usually it is necessary to position the potentiometer on 0^ , however 2 positions can be used 0^ and 180^ .

1 - Adjust the potentiometer on 0^ when the subwoofer and the speakers are positioned at the same distance of the listening area.
2- Adjust the potentiometer on 180^ when the subwoofer is positioned 5 ft (1.5m) ahead or behind the speakers.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If you have a problem with your Xi SYSTEM®, turn off your sound source and try the solutions below. If you still have a problem, contact your Cabasse dealer to arrange for service.

Problems	Solutions
The system does not function at all	·Make sure the amplifier and the subwoofer plugged into an operating AC wall outlet and that the subwoofer is turned ON or AUTO. ·Be sure that the right source is selected on the amplifier (video, CD, DVD, tuner...).
No sound	·Check the speaker connections. ·Turn the subwoofer on ON or AUTO. ·For digital sound, be sure a coaxial or optical cable connects the digital output of the DVD player with the digital input of your amplifier.
Not enough or too much bass	·Move the subwoofer closer to a wall or a corner to increase very low bass frequencies. ·Move it farther away from a wall or a corner to decrease very low bass frequencies. ·Adjust the LFE level control of your audio video amplifier
No surround sound	·Check that the adjustments of your audio video amplifier are correct

CLEANING THE SPEAKERS

The cabinets of Xi SYSTEM® speakers may be cleaned with a soft damp cloth. Do not use any sprays near the system or allow liquids to spill into any openings. Also, do not use any solvents, chemicals, or cleaning solutions containing alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives.

The grille assemblies on the speakers may be carefully vacu- umed, if necessary. Please note that the drivers are located directly behind the grille cloth, and are easily damaged if rea- sonable care is not taken.
